- Description: Fatou arrived at the Berlin zoo in 1959, believed to be about two years old. At 69 she is the oldest gorilla living in human care anywhere in the world — against a typical wild lifespan of 35 to 40 years. No cake for her birthday, though. Sugar isn't good for her now.

Last spring in Berlin, a gorilla sat down to a birthday spread of cherry tomatoes, beets, leeks and lettuce. No cake. Sugar is not good for her anymore. Her name is Fatou, and on the thirteenth of April she turned sixty-nine — the oldest gorilla living in human care anywhere in the world.

In the wild, a gorilla lives around thirty-five to forty years. Fatou has nearly doubled that, in one city, at one zoo, since 1959.

She arrived in what was then West Berlin, in the middle of the Cold War, believed to be about two years old. As Guinness World Records tells it, the story goes that a French sailor had brought her out of West Africa and bartered her in Marseille to cover a bar tab, and that an animal trader sold her on to the zoo. Everything after that — more than six decades — happened in one place. She became a mother there. She became a grandmother there. The zoo's director says she has delighted countless people across those decades.

Sixty-nine does not come free. Fatou has lost her teeth. She lives with arthritis and with hearing loss. She moves more slowly now, and she needs more time to get through the ordinary business of a day.

Which is where the quieter half of this story sits — not with Fatou, but with the people who arranged their working lives around her. A team of veterinarians, curators and keepers at Zoo Berlin watches her health closely and sits down together, again and again, to reassess it. Her curator, Doctor Jennifer Hahn, puts it plainly: at this age you have to look very carefully and respond to the individual animal. So they rebuilt her days. Fruit came off the menu, because that much sugar carries real risk for an aging body. She eats several small meals spread across the hours, scattered around her enclosure or tucked inside puzzles, so that finding her food still asks something of her mind. She has an enclosure of her own, away from the boisterous gorilla group, because her curator's view is that at sixty-nine she has earned the quiet. When the weather is kind, she takes it outside.

Guinness World Records sent birthday wishes. She is the oldest animal at the entire zoo, a title she inherited in 2024\. And the zoo's director calls her something more useful than a record holder. He calls her an ambassador. Western lowland gorillas are endangered, pressed hard by habitat destruction and poaching, and one old gorilla with a name makes that case in a way no statistic manages.

Here's the part I keep turning over. A record like hers gets described as the animal's achievement. It isn't, entirely. Sixty-nine years is also a record of attention, of people noticing and adjusting and cooking and watching, choosing to keep going one ordinary day at a time, for six decades.

What's the longest you've ever known an animal? Tell me in the comments.
